If the Kindle Can’t Kill the Nook, the Free Kindle for PC Desktop App Will
In a clever and reactionary move a couple of days ago, Amazon has announced the Kindle for PC. It’s a free application that will allow users who don’t have the Amazon Kindle to purchase, download and read titles available at the Kindle Store. Obviously, Amazon is hitting on upcoming market rival, Barnes and Nobles. Barnes and Noble has just launched its online ebook store, iPhone ebook reader app and of course the Nook ebook reader.According to the official PR:
Kindle for PC features Amazon’s Whispersync technology that automatically saves and synchronizes bookmarks and last page read across devices. Whether you read Kindle books on a Kindle, Kindle DX, or one of the free Kindle applications, you can always have your reading with you and never lose your place. With Kindle for PC, you can read some on your PC, read some on your Kindle, and always pick up right where you left off. Whispersync helped make the Kindle for iPhone application the most popular books app in the Apple App Store.
It looks like Amazon is trying to kill not only Barnes and Noble’s Nook eReader but also its own Kindle. Of course this is true only for users who would prefer to get their daily dose of ebook reading at home.
In addition to the Kindle for PC, Amazon is also coming out with Kindle for Mac (KindleMac sounds better!) pretty soon. So, it is definitely targeting both group of computer users.
