Does eBook Readers Make Lousy Gift?
I read this article last Friday but didn’t bother to make a post about as I personally disagree with it. Anyway, it just got into Techmeme stream the same time that Amazon is running a press release saying that November is the Kindle’s best sales month to date.
This made me believe that, well it seems that the Kindle doesn’t make up for a lousy gift after all, as I assume that those who bought the Kindle are not keeping it to themselves. They are most giving it to a love one come Christmas day.Anyway going back to the article, which was published by the way by PC World, they identified 7 reasons why ebook readers make lousy gift this year.
- Buying an e-book reader now is like buying a non-cell phone PDA a few years ago. We’re on the brink of leaving those gadgets behind, and integrating their functionality into a multi-purpose device. This is banking on the rumored Apple Tablet PC and other advanced ebook readers that are coming out in 2010.
- E-book readers are the least discounted gadgets on the market – That’s because of scarcity of supply perhaps?
- There are so many other new ways to read e-books – Agree, but it doesn’t compare to the way ebook readers are trying to mimic actual reading of books in printed form.
- Giving an e-book reader may involve committing a perosn to a specific technology – It’s like giving somebody an iPod Touch, or other media devices for a the first time.
- E-book readers are old and busted.
- Everyone who really wanted one already has one – I want one and I’m still thinking whether to buy the Kindle, Sony PRS Reader or wait for the Asus Eee Reader.
- One of the best Choices is unavailable – the e-book reader market is just starting to pick up.
