eBook Reader Round-Up, What’s Available Right Now

Before everybody else join the ebook reader market, here’s a round-up of what’s available so far. Some of these ebook readers are not so well known that might think that they don’t actually exist. But they do. And who knows you might get them instead of the well known brands.

Amazon Kindle

What started the sudden interest on ebook readers could well be attributed to the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle’s bussiness model, no matter how it is criticized actually have worked wonders for Amazon. This ebook reader is so successful that it has already 3 models under its wing – the 1st gen Kindle ($195.99) , the 2nd gen Kindle ($219.00), Kindle Latest Generation and International Version ($259),  and Kindle DX ($489.00)

Jetbook ($294.99)

Features a 5-inch VGA screen, support e-book contents in various languages, bookmarks and auto page turn, adjustable font type and size, screen rotation, portrait and landscape modes

Sony PRS-505 Portable Digital e-Reader ($274.98)

Sony’s most portable ereader displays ebooks purchased from the CONNECT ebook online store. It supports Adobe PDFs, TXT, RTF, BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG and Microsoft WORD files. Plus it can also play MP3 and AAC files unless those files are protected. It comes with an internal 192MB memory and SD Memory Card slot which can hold up to 2GB capacity, Memory Stick Duo media up to 8GB capacity. It has a 6-inch display.

Sony Digital PRS300SC ($194.77)

Here’s a tone down version of the PRS505 ereader. It has an elegant, lightweight design with 5-inch display. It can hold up to 350 titles of ebooks at a time as well as access a wide number of online bookstores. This ereader has a paper-like display for easy, natural reading and comes with Intuitive ebook Library software for PC and Mac.

Sony Digital PRS600BC ($291.95)

Another 6-inch ereader from Sony, this time with touch scree navigation feature. It can also hold up to 350 ebooks at a time and has a freehand highlighting and annotation features. Access to online bookstores is also possible plus it boasts of a thin, light and highly portable design.

Sony PRS500 ($295)

This ereader feature a slim and relatively lightweight form factor. ebooks are easy to read in bright environment. Unlike the previous ereaders, the Sony PRS 500 ereader has an memory card slot which you can use to plug-in an SD or Memory Stick Pro card. It supports PDF and Word Files, image files and plays MP3 and AAC audio.

Sony PRS700 BC ($349.99)

This latest Sony PRS ereader features an interactive touch screen display and built-in light. It lets you download ebooks and read them on this delightful display. It boasts  an impressive 6.0-inch, touch screen display, this Reader uses paper-like E Ink technology which makes it easier to read, even in bright-light situations. In addition to a built-in light, it also features  an interactive touch screen that lets you turn pages with the slide of a finger or activate the bookmark. You can also create annotations with a virtual keyboard, highlight text with a stylus pen, search for text in your digital book, and easily adjust the font size. A faster processor gives you quicker response times when opening content or turning pages.

iRex Iliad Book Edition ($954.28)

It’s pricey, yes. But this ebook reader has many advanced features including an 8.1-inch ePaper, e-ink display. It allows you to read in full daylight and comes with a free software updates. It supports PDF, Mobipocket books, HTML and TXT. It also supports external memory storage. It also allows you to annotate what you are reading using a Wacom stylus.

Cool-ER

The COOL-ER uses E-Ink, a new technology that gives you a screen with a “like paper” display, replicating the experience of reading a book. Using power only for “page turns” means that a single charge lasts for 8000 pages and unlike a book, the electronic display allows you to change the text size to suit you! 6-inch display.
