Sony is about to release its latest ereader and it’s got several features that might make Amazon to rethink about how they offer Kindle books.

According to this report, Sony’s new ereader to be called the “digital edition” will bring back ownership of digital books to readers.  Sony’s Digital Edition ereader will adopt the ePub file format. Sony also wants other publishers to make their ebooks less restrictive, something which Adobe’s Digital Editions is not currently doing.

Hence, ebooks that Sony’s Digital Edition will carry can be digitally “loaned” free of charge for up to 21 days. If you will recall, Barnes and Nobles says that ebooks on their Nook can be shared with friends for 14 days, but the owner won’t be able to read the ebooks while it is on loan.

Other information about the Sony Digital Edition eReader include – a 9-inch display, page-changing swipe gestures, annotations, and possibly 3G broadband connectivity.

Price of this new Sony ereader is expected to go as high as $400.
