Acer Unveils the LumiRead 6-Inch E-Book Reader, Powered by Android

Acer couldn’t wait until Computex 2010 in Taipei which is happening next month, so somewhere in China, it just presented the Acer LumiRead e-book reader. This Android-powered ebook reader features a 6-inch display and supports Acer’s clear.fi solution – a content supply platform for accessing and sharing e-books and audio-books.

The Acer LumiRead runs on both Wi-Fi and 3G and has built-in modules for downloading contents. Acer has also signed a deal with Barnes & Noble to offer its catalog of ebooks on the Acer ebook reader. Aside from this, Acer has also signed a deal with German-based Internet book retailer Libri.de to make their catalogs of ebooks available on the LumiRead as well.

Specs of the Acer LumiRead include – 6-inch backlit E-ink display, 2GB flash memory, scanner that allows for scanning book’s ISBN codes to create customized wish-list and search on supported online library and book stores.

The Acer LumiRead also has a QWERTY keyboard just below its screen, something that would remind you of the Kindle. It also supports various ebook file formats.

No words yet on when the Acer LumiRead will be available and for how much.

Bookeen Outs New Opus Color E-Reader

Bookeen, makers of the Opus e-reader which is actually a small e-reader with with 5-inch display has just released a new version of their e-reader. Dubbed Bookeen Opus Color, it’s basically the original Opus e-Reader but sporting several new punky colors, 7 of them to be exact.

In addition Bookeen Opus Color E-reader also features a new reading software called Book. This is a faster reading software than the previous Opus E-Reader. The e-reader also supports ePUB and PDF file formats, has 1GB memory and a microSD card slot.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook Available Now on Best Buy

There you go folks. If the iPad doesn’t appeal to you as an e-book reader, you might want to pick up the Barnes & Noble Nook instead. And no, you don’t have to go to the nearest B&N brick and mortar store, just check out Best Buy online and can score one Nook for yourself.

Best Buy is now offering Nook for $259.99 and promises to deliver the Nook within a day or two.

Best Buy to Sell Barnes & Noble Nook Starting April 18

Ready for some more e-reader style battle? It looks like other e-book reader makers have felt the threat being imposed by the Apple iPad. So much so that what used to be an exclusive distribution of their devices is slowly being transferred to retail stores.

Take the case of the Barnes and Noble Nook. Right now, you can only get this either online or via B&N’s bookstore. You’ll notice this if you search for Nook on a site search engine. But come April 18, if this report is true, you will soon be able to get a nook from Best Buy stores.

Engadget managed to get a shot of Best Buy’s inventory system and found an entry for the Nook.

Interpark’s Biscuit E-Book Reader

Here’s another e-book reader wanting to get a piece of the blooming e-book market. This time it’s from a Korean manufacturer Interpark which launched a rather oddly named e-book reader called – the Biscuit.

Yes, you read it right – the Biscuit e-book reader device sports a 6-inch e-ink display with 600×800 resolution, 4GB internal memory, built-in stereo speaker and integrated 3G connectivity that you can use to access Interpark’s online e-book store.

The Biscuit e-book reader supports ePub, Adobe, PDF, MS Office files, hwp, tXT, bmp, jpg, png, gif and MP3 files. It will set you back for around $280.

Kobo to Release Cheap E-Book Reader

Just before the Apple iPad becomes available to the thousands of buyers on April 3, Kobo has announced that its e-book reader will be available in Borders store.

And the good news is that this e-book device will be available at a dirt cheap price of $150. So if the iPad’s price is preventing you from getting it but you want an e-book reader cheaper than the Kindle, Kobo is a good alternative.

Specs-wise, the Kobo e-book reader features a 6-inch monochrome E-ink screen and supports the ePub e-book format. Kobo app is available for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and soon on the iPad. It doesn’t have 3G connectivity features though. So you would need to connect it to your PC to transfer e-books.

Alex E-Reader Goes Up for Sale in the U.S., Ships Mid-April

Finally, if you’ve been waiting for Spring Design’s Alex eReader, your wait is finally over, as the said e-Reader is finally available for pre-order in the U.S. The Alex E-Reader is available for $399, slightly more expensive than the 6-inch Amazon Kindle.

In case you forgot already, the Alex e-Reader runs on the Android platform and it supports EPUB, PDF, HTML and TXT formats of ebooks.

The Alex E-Reader also features a 6-inch EPD screen and a full color 3.5-inch Android-based touchscreen LCD. It also boasts of full web browsing through Wi-Fi. It connects with Google Books and comes with a microSD card slot to allow storage expansion.

Spring Design’s Alex E-Reader will start shipping mid-April.

LibreDigital to Deliver Electronic Content to Sony E-Readers

Sony and LibreDigital has entered into a content delivery deal whereby the later will be delivering digital newspapers and magazines such as New York Times, The New Yorker and PC Magazine. The Sony device which will get these content is the newly released Reader Daily Edition.
